It’s time to clear the air.

We are what we eat and what we breathe.  But while we give enough importance to the food we eat, when it comes to the quality of air around us, we are surprisingly (and dangerously) nonchalant. The time we spend in closed environments – be it in the office or at home – is significantly more than that spent outdoors.  As a result, indoor air can get equally (if not more) toxic than outside air – a consequence of poisonous chemicals released from synthetic materials, poor circulation and germs & viruses.

As the climate changes and winter draws near, it is the perfect time to invest your time in some green leafy friends. It is a known fact that plants can help us breathe better by giving us oxygen. Certain leafy greens can even absorb hazardous contaminants and help produce clean air, acting as powerful natural cleansers.

We recommend some of our favourite air purifying plants that not only look incredibly pretty, but also score high on ease of maintenance.

Bamboo

bamboo

Growing between 3 to 6 feet tall, the long and elegant leaves of this sturdy palm sweep away toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide, xylene, and chloroform. During the cold winter months when air is very dry, the bamboo palm emits much-needed moisture.

Snake Plant

One of the best tropical plants for greenhorns, this super sturdy plant has thin, upright leaves with irregular banding that resemble the skin of a reptile. It removes at least 107 known air pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, formaldehyde, chloroform, benzene, xylene and trichloroethylene. The Sansevieria, as it is called, also produces large amounts of oxygen throughout the night, making it an excellent plant to keep in the bedroom. You can keep it in darkest corner of your house and it will still keep growing. Forgot watering? Not a problem – do it next time.
